This past weekend two of our Gary 4-H & FFA members traveled to Fort Worth to exhibit their Registered Limousin Breeding heifers. These heifers were raised right here in Gary, TX at the Red Rock Limousin Ranch which is a nationally recognized and respected Limousin Cattle Breeder. This show, much like all Texas Major Livestock Shows, is open to any 4-H or FFA member ages 8-18 that wants to raise and show in these shows from across the state of Texas. So, thousands of students travel competing in them! Registered heifer projects are often times two year projects where a student obtains the heifer (female bovine that hasn't had a calf yet) when they are 6-8 months old, halter breaks them, works with their hair, they are fed high quality feed rations, and these animals are prepared for a life in a cattle operation by breeding them to high quality show-bulls that will increase their value exponentially. These two students will show these heifers throughout the spring semester at major livestock shows like San Antonio and Houston along with other students from Gary showing goats, sheep and pigs! Our Gary Show Team is one that is growing and bringing home awesome experiences, scholarship opportunities as well as a prize or two along the way! Congratulations to Senior Caitlynn Ayers and 3rd Grader Cash Stutes on their successes: Caitlynn- Limousin Shoot Out Show: 2nd in Class Junior Show: 3rd in Class Cash- Limousin Shoot Out Show: 3rd in Class Junior Show: 5th in Class

Senior parents, we’ve had a few students ask so we also wanted to let parents know; While completing the FAFSA is a graduation requirement, unless the family wishes to opt out, tonight’s FAFSA Night is optional! If your senior has already completed their FAFSA, already has a plan to do it with you at home, or just cannot make it tonight that is okay! The application itself has been streamlined from recent years, and easier than ever to complete, but if you ever need help completing it just contact Mr. Davis!

The due date for the first scholarship packet is Friday, February 7th! If your senior needs any assistance please do not hesitate to contact Mr. Davis! Also, we are still on for our FAFSA Night tomorrow at 5PM in the Media Center for any seniors that need help filling it out, it is just recommended that your FSA ID is created beforehand.

Our friends at the Panola Archery Club have two events coming soon for families in Panola County! Kid's & Vet's Day We host a FREE outdoor learning event each year for K-12 kids. We call it Kid's & Vet's Day because we have our local veterans groups come out and be present. The kid's pre-register (registration deadline is Feb 7th) and the event is Feb 22nd. They will be given a tshirt at check in and they are given lunch. The will go through a circuit of 4-5 learning stations (archery, .22s, shotgun, Panola County Wildlife Biologist, and Texas A&M Forestry). The Panola County Sheriff's Dept joins with us for this event and they handle gun safety at the shotgun station. Our kids grew up in the woods hunting, but we started this event 4 years ago for all of those kids who may not have this type of exposure. It is also a good way to teach kids gun safety in a fun safe environment. 3D Outdoor Archery Our 3D Archery Competitions are open to all age groups and archers with any type of equipment. We have complete families that come out to register and compete. Each archer competes with their own peer group but they are able to shoot the range with their family. It is scored and there are winners for each archer classification. We keep the registration fees as low as possible to encourage families to come out with their kids so they can have this experience together.
