Mission Statement

The mission of Gary ISD Library and Media Center is to foster a love of reading for pleasure and information by connecting our students, faculty, and administration with the resources, technology, and critical thinking skills they need to inspire learning.  We will enrich lives by maintaining a nurturing, safe, fun, and inviting environment for all and strive to meet the needs of all ethnic, cultural, and educational differences for all patrons to excel in our global community.  We will collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to inspire learning and ensure that we have adequate resources to become 21st century learners.

Vision

The Gary ISD Library and Media Center actively provides resources which support and enhance the school's curriculum, which will challenge and empower our students to be successful users of information and life-long readers. These resources reflect the students, faculty, and staff's educational, cultural, and recreational information needs.

Belief Statement

The school library and media center is a resource that complements the educational program of the school through the interaction of professional personnel and other members of the learning community.

 Goals

  • To provide materials and services which meet the information and recreational needs of the learning community.

  • To provide opportunities for collaboration between the library staff and classroom teachers to incorporate information literacy into instruction.

  • To promote information literacy.

  • To promote life-long reading through a diverse collection of literature.

 Objectives

The following objectives have been selected to work toward the overall goals of the Gary ISD Library and Media Center

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to locate information and materials in the library using common library practices such as the Dewey Decimal System and the online catalog.

  • Students will demonstrate the ability to effectively use online resources such as TexQuest and knowledge of the internet, including online safety.

  • Students will effectively use resources when conducting research and choose materials that best meet their research needs.

  • Students will read for recreation as well as for learning at appropriate text complexity levels.

The above goals will be achieved through lessons developed to address specific information skills as well as collaborative lessons designed with teachers to integrate curriculum standards and information literacy skills.  The library staff will collaborate with teachers on student research lessons.

Gary ISD Intellectual Freedom and Censorship Statement

Reading is a privilege and the right of every student.

As you select the library books you will read, please understand that every book is not the best choice for every student.

If a book is unappealing or offensive to you in any way, please return it and select another.

You, the student, know better than the librarian what reading materials best serves you and your standards and beliefs.

“Intellectual freedom is the right of every individual to both seek and receive information from all points of view without restriction. It provides for free access to all expressions of ideas through which any and all sides of a question, cause or movement may be explored.” --ala.org
